Discover How Franciscan University is Revolutionizing Digital Evangelization

As Advent approaches, the Franciscan University of Steubenville is offering a meaningful way for people to prepare for this sacred season. Their new series, “Advent Lessons and Carols,” is now available for free on FaithandReason.com, the university’s vibrant digital platform.

This video series guides viewers through salvation history, combining Scripture, choral music, and thoughtful meditations performed by university student ensembles, led by Vincent E. Rone, a fine arts associate professor and director of sacred music. Each episode journeys from the fall of Adam to the birth of Christ.

“Advent is a time to ready our hearts for Christ’s coming,” Rone explains. “Our series invites people to engage with Scripture, prayer, and uplifting sacred music.” The hope is that all who watch will enter the Christmas season filled with joy and gratitude.

The tradition of “Advent Lessons and Carols” dates back to 19th-century England and has become a cherished way to express Christian hope. By continuing this tradition, Franciscan University aims to engage the community in meaningful reflection.

From ancient hymns like “Ave Maris Stella” to beloved carols such as “Silent Night” and “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” the series captures the spirit of Advent and Christmas. The high-quality recordings took place at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Weirton, enhancing the beauty of this sacred music.

The Rev. Dave Pivonka, TOR, university president, emphasizes that Advent offers a sacred opportunity to pause and renew our hearts in Christ. “We aim to provide moments of peace and beauty,” he says. He hopes the Scripture readings and sacred songs deepen everyone’s awareness of God’s love made manifest in Jesus.

Beyond the digital series, the university will hold a live Advent Lessons and Carols service on December 5 at 7 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel. This event is also free and welcomes the community.

This series highlights the growth of FaithandReason.com, featuring:

  • Video series on Scripture and Catholic culture
  • Interviews with prominent Catholic scholars
  • Spiritual reflections for personal growth
  • Podcasts and pilgrimage opportunities

According to a recent survey from the Pew Research Center, over 60% of Americans identify as Christian, making Advent and its traditions a significant aspect of faith for many. Engaging in meaningful practices can enhance spiritual life during this time.

In a world that often feels chaotic, Franciscan University’s “Advent Lessons and Carols” offers a moment of tranquility and reflection. By embracing this sacred season, many find a renewed sense of purpose and connection to their faith.
