Nine months ago, I visited Glenn Hall and brought a simple gift: a frame featuring three portraits of him during his NHL career with the Red Wings, Black Hawks, and Blues. As he looked at the photos, he joked, “Those are the three best-looking guys in my house.”
Our last meeting was in February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. We were at a sports celebrity dinner in Saskatoon, not far from his hometown of Humboldt. The warmth and admiration he received from fellow Hall of Fame goalies like Martin Brodeur, Grant Fuhr, Bernie Parent, and Ed Belfour were touching. They all looked up to Mr. Goalie, a true legend in their eyes.
Since September, we’ve lost other goalie legends, including Ken Dryden and Ed Giacomin. The hockey world feels emptier without them.
I remember the last time I saw Glenn in October 2015, as Pat Hall drove down the long driveway. Glenn waved goodbye from the porch. I still recall his words with pride: “I do nothing better than anybody you ever knew. I can go out and do nothing all day. And it takes me a long time to do it.”
Glenn’s humor and humility always made him special. He inspired many, not just in hockey but in life. Each game he played added to the rich history of the sport. His dedication reminds us how passion shapes our lives.
In a recent survey by the NHL, fans ranked Hall among their top ten favorite goalies of all time. This shows how his legacy lives on. Glenn Hall wasn’t just a player; he was a symbol of hard work and perseverance.
