On December 15, members of IAM District 66 gathered at the WAFER Food Pantry in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to lend a helping hand. They sorted donations and prepared essential items for community members in need.
IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli said, “Events like this show what the IAM is about—working people helping working people.” The District’s commitment to community service shines through the H.E.L.P.S. program, emphasizing solidarity and compassion.
District 66 often collaborates with WAFER, recognizing its crucial role in providing food and hygiene products to locals. Just last month, members of Local 21 organized a food drive that brought in both food and monetary donations. The Local 21 Shop Committee even matched raised funds, contributing over $600 to the cause.
Building on this success, more than a dozen IAM members and their families showed up to assist at WAFER. They worked side by side with staff, making a tangible difference in people’s lives. “District 66 members didn’t just donate; they rolled up their sleeves,” said IAM District 66 Directing Business Representative Jana Kirch. “This hands-on effort strengthens our communities.”
The donations collected during the Rotary Lights event replenished WAFER’s stock. Volunteers sorted items into labeled boxes—like “breakfast” and “hygiene/health”—and organized canned goods. Fresh items, such as bread and garlic, were packaged for easy distribution. Throughout the evening, community members came in steady waves, choosing food and hygiene items until 8 p.m.
Kirch noted that the individuals served came from diverse backgrounds—families, seniors, students—highlighting that those in need don’t fit outdated stereotypes. Many faced tough choices, like deciding between buying groceries or paying bills.
IAM District 66 remains dedicated to improving life in their communities. WAFER’s approach allows individuals to select what they need most, fostering dignity and choice. As we see a rise in food insecurity—over 38 million people in the U.S. experienced hunger in 2020 according to the USDA—such community support is more vital than ever.
Through ongoing partnerships and volunteer efforts, IAM District 66 demonstrates the power of unity and compassion in addressing pressing community needs.
