Discover How In-Water Dry Environment Repairs Can Save You from Costly Drydock Shutdowns

Subsea Global Solutions recently completed a challenging thruster installation and rudder bushing replacement while keeping the vessel in the water. This approach saved time and avoided the need for drydocking.

The project took place in Portland, Oregon. The initial plan required drydocking, but when that didn’t fit the vessel’s schedule, Subsea Global Solutions stepped in. They were chosen for their strong track record in in-water repairs and their successful history with this client.

Teams from various Subsea Global Solutions locations—Long Beach, Port Angeles, Miami, and Houston—came together for this operation. They worked around the clock, with several groups focusing on different tasks like building the cofferdam, installing the thruster, and replacing the rudder bushing.

A crucial part of this repair was creating a custom cofferdam, designed to keep water out while the rudder bushing was changed. This impressive structure weighed over 51 metric tons and generated 300 metric tons of buoyant force. It completely surrounded the rudder, which weighed 43.5 metric tons, enabling a careful and effective repair. Notably, this cofferdam is one of the largest ever used for such an operation.

Even with challenging weather conditions, strong currents, and limited visibility, Subsea Global Solutions’ talented dive teams carried out the repairs skillfully. Their efforts ensured the vessel could quickly return to service, on time and ready to go.
