Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Jeff Bezos, is taking on a new challenge: protecting Earth from asteroids. They recently announced their Near-Earth Objects (NEO) Hunter mission. This mission aims to deflect dangerous asteroids before they reach our planet.
To create this mission, Blue Origin is teaming up with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech. Together, they’re exploring various techniques to redirect incoming asteroids. This could potentially save the Earth from catastrophic events that have occurred in the past, like the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.
So, how does the NEO Hunter work? The mission has two main phases. First, it will send out a fleet of small satellites, or cubesats, to analyze a target asteroid. They’ll collect crucial data on the asteroid’s makeup and size, helping scientists decide on the best way to change its path.
One method involves using an ion beam to slowly alter the asteroid’s course. An ion beam is a focused stream of charged particles that can affect the asteroid’s momentum over time.
If that doesn’t work, NEO Hunter has a backup plan. It can make a direct hit on the asteroid, inspired by NASA’s DART mission, which successfully changed the trajectory of the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. NEO Hunter would crash into the asteroid at high speeds, redirecting it away from Earth. A smaller satellite, called the Slamcam, will document this impact to confirm if the mission was successful.
The NEO Hunter mission will utilize Blue Origin’s Blue Ring spacecraft platform. Blue Ring isn’t just a launch vehicle; it’s designed to provide a range of services including transportation, refueling, data relay, and even cloud computing in space. It can carry payloads up to 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) and aims to support missions to the Moon and Mars.
Recent studies highlight the importance of planetary defense. According to a National Geographic report, about 66 million years ago, an asteroid impact led to mass extinction. Today, experts like Dr. Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer, stress the need for proactive measures to prevent future disasters. With advances in asteroid detection and deflection technology, missions like NEO Hunter are a significant step forward.
