Long before young women define their style, they often explore their sense of self. For 15-year-old Jazzmine Bourke, this journey started at home, inspired by her mother, Kaysian Wilson. As a stylist and designer, Kaysian has been a guiding force in Jazzmine’s life, shaping not just her fashion sense but her confidence.
“I love experimenting with colors and accessories,” Jazzmine shared, wearing a light-pink camisole and a plaid skirt that showcased her vibrant style during an interview at Cellar 8 in St. Andrew. For her, fashion is a reflection of personality.
Kaysian, the creative mind behind Flowerchild, believes style advice goes beyond clothing. It’s about instilling confidence. “The most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence,” she emphasizes. “Stand tall and walk with purpose.”
Kaysian recalls her teenage years, where she found inspiration in Miss Jamaica Universe pageants and fashion magazines like Complex and The Fader. She has passed down her love for accessories, influenced by her mother’s collection of jewelry. “I have a picture of my mom wearing ten rings, and I adore rings!” she laughed.
Kaysian launched Flowerchild in 2011 but began her journey in 1999, creating unique outfits for parties. “My godfather had a tailoring shop, and I started making clothes to stand out. Friends soon wanted pieces, too,” she explained.
Today, social media gives teens like Jazzmine access to endless styles. She applies her mom’s tips, preferring clothing that fits well over fleeting trends. “A balanced outfit looks refined,” Kaysian advises. “If you show legs, keep the top covered.”
While Jazzmine initially struggled to understand these guidelines, she now appreciates their value. “We have a rule: crop tops require long pants, and shorts don’t mix with crop tops,” she noted.
Attending St. Andrew High School for Girls, Jazzmine is drawn to the performing arts. She dreams of shining on Broadway, sharing impactful stories. “I want to inspire others with my art,” she said.
Kaysian, who has another child, sees Jazzmine carving her path with pride. She emphasizes the importance of being a good person above all. “Stay true to yourself,” she advises. “Confidence comes from authenticity. When you embrace your true self, insecurities fade.”
