La Sierra University recently approved a new multi-year budget, aiming to boost enrollment significantly through 2028. The Board of Trustees expects to see strong growth, particularly in the freshman class. Starting from July 1, 2025, the budget’s first year is based on last year’s numbers, while years two and three plan for aggressive increases.
According to recent data, La Sierra has seen an incredible near 300% surge in incoming freshmen compared to this time last year. Graduate and transfer student numbers are also up, contributing to an overall 200% increase in new registrations. Notably, these figures do not yet include anticipated registrations from the criminal justice program.
As part of the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, La Sierra focuses on its mission to serve Adventist communities. A notable portion of new students are coming from Adventist academies, reflecting this commitment.
To meet its future goals, La Sierra has set tiered enrollment benchmarks: bronze, silver, and gold levels. The long-term target is 3,000 enrolled students by 2035, with final goals to be approved soon.
“These are ambitious goals,” says President Christon Arthur. “But with our dedicated team, we believe we can achieve them. We want to be the top choice for students seeking a Christ-centered, inclusive community.”
This year, the university is investing more in marketing and recruitment strategies. For instance, they adjusted their fall enrollment timeline to align with other schools, making it easier for students to consider La Sierra. They also launched a pilot program offering housing incentives for first-year Adventist students and are developing outreach programs to welcome new admits with gift boxes.
Furthermore, La Sierra’s online presence has improved significantly, thanks to newly appointed leadership. The strategic planning committee has focused on creating a unified vision, emphasizing the cultivation of human potential to improve the world. Their approach incorporates feedback from campus surveys and stakeholder insights to align with current trends in Adventist higher education.
In recent strategy sessions, faculty and staff have outlined initiatives for the upcoming academic years that aim not just to increase enrollment, but to foster a healthier campus culture. They plan to enhance communication between administration and staff through regular meetings, keeping everyone informed and engaged.
A highlight of this progress is the approval of tenure for four faculty members who are dedicated to making a significant impact within their fields: Marlene Ferreras (Practical Theology), Kim Feiler (Health and Exercise Science), Jesse Grismer (Biology), and Ronald Osborn (Ethics and Philosophy).
Reflecting on the future, Arthur says, “The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams.” La Sierra is preparing its community not only to envision success but to actively create it. With faith at its core, the university is optimistic about the journey ahead.
