LOS ANGELES — This season has shown two very different sides of the Lakers.
February 1 marked a significant moment for Lakers fans: the day Luka Dončić was traded to the team. What many might overlook is that the Lakers played a game just hours before this historic trade, defeating the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Fast forward a month to their recent match, and the Lakers looked quite different. Instead of relying on their usual stars like LeBron James or Max Christie, they turned to clutch performances from Dalton Knecht and Gabe Vincent. Together, they helped push the Lakers to a nail-biting 113-109 overtime victory over the Knicks.
In their first matchup, the Lakers showed they could win even when they were short-handed. The recent game, however, demonstrated they could still pull through despite not playing their best.
Coach JJ Redick praised his team’s spirit. He acknowledged Jalen Brunson’s outstanding performance, noting how the game had a playoff-like intensity. And that run eventually came. To close out the third quarter, Knecht hit a key 3-pointer, reducing the deficit. When Reaves found his rhythm in the fourth quarter, the momentum shifted. With just over a minute left, Vincent drained another 3-pointer to clinch the lead.
In overtime, Dončić quickly made his presence felt, scoring five points in a row, showcasing his confidence and skill. His playmaking ability made a significant difference for the Lakers. Once seen as just a good team aiming for the playoffs, they’ve transformed into a serious contender.
Since the trade, the Lakers have dominated, boasting a record of 12-2 and currently on an eight-game winning streak—marking their best run since their championship season in 2019-20.
As the playoffs approach, the Lakers are looking formidable. Coach Redick emphasized the importance of effort in the postseason. His players have shown the ability to dig deep and give their all, regardless of circumstances.
Leaving New York in February with a 28-19 record and a new star in Dončić, the Lakers are beginning to realize how bright their future looks.
