The University of Nebraska–Lincoln is making waves as one of the top 25 large institutions producing Gilman Scholars. This recognition comes from the long-standing Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program, which helps American undergraduates study or intern abroad.
Launched by Congress in 2001, the Gilman program aims to make studying overseas accessible. As we celebrate its 25th anniversary, universities that have significantly contributed to producing Gilman Scholars are highlighted. UNL stands out among large institutions, those hosting over 15,000 students.
To help students apply for this valuable scholarship, the Global Experiences Office teams up with the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. They offer workshops and personalized advice during application periods in March and October. Since 2012, this partnership has supported over 350 students in becoming Gilman Scholars.
Marnie Nelson, the director of the Global Experiences Office, shares her pride in collaborating to better serve students. She emphasizes that the Gilman Scholarship plays a crucial role in expanding global opportunities for all students.
Renae Ninneman, the global experiences coordinator, plays a key role in guiding students through the application process. She relishes working with students to secure these scholarships and help them embark on transformative academic journeys.
One such student, Cheyenne Storms, is a 2024 Gilman Scholar who studied in Singapore. She reflects on her experience, saying, “With help from the Gilman Scholarship, I could afford the program. We dove into Singapore’s rich culture, fueling my passion for travel and global citizenship.”
The Global Experiences Office supports over 40 faculty-led programs each year, allowing students from all nine colleges to broaden their horizons through study abroad. They also facilitate semester and summer programs with partner institutions.
Courtney Santos, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, highlights the impact of the Gilman Scholars on Nebraska communities. “Their experiences cultivate skills like curiosity and cross-cultural understanding, enriching our regional workforce,” she explains.
The Gilman Program is backed by the U.S. Department of State, highlighting the importance of international education. As students engage globally, they return with insights that benefit not just themselves, but also their communities.
