The Los Angeles Film Critics Association recently announced their winners for this year’s standout films. One Battle After Another took home the award for Best Picture, while The Secret Agent was the runner-up, also winning Best Film Not in the English Language.
Paul Thomas Anderson earned Best Director for One Battle After Another, with Ryan Coogler as the runner-up for Sinners.
In the acting categories, Ethan Hawke and Rose Byrne were recognized for their leading performances in Blue Moon and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, respectively. For supporting roles, Stellan Skarsgård and Teyana Taylor took home the prizes for Sentimental Value and One Battle After Another.
Best Cinematography went to Adolpho Veloso for Train Dreams, while Hannah Beachler earned the Best Production Design award for Sinners. Best Editing was awarded to Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme.
In animation, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain won, with KPop Demon Hunters as the runner-up.
The critics association also honored Judy Kim, the owner of Gardena Cinema, a historic independent movie palace. They recognized her contributions to keeping the cinema vibrant since 1976.
Philip Kaufman, a renowned filmmaker, received the Career Achievement Award. LAFCA President Robert Abele highlighted Kaufman’s range and impact on cinema, emphasizing his influential role in works like The Right Stuff and The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
It’s significant to note that past winners of this prestigious association often receive Oscar nominations. Last year, Anora won Best Picture from LAFCA and later snagged the Academy Award for Best Picture. This tradition showcases the critics’ eye for films with lasting impressions in Hollywood.
This year marked another occasion where the LAFCA maintained gender-neutral acting categories, promoting equality and inclusivity in its selections.
In summary, the L.A. Film Critics Association celebrated not just outstanding films, but also influential figures and community contributions.
