At Evans Junior High in Ottumwa, Iowa, a brain health room is making a positive impact on nearly 30 students every day. This new resource helps kids manage their emotions and get back to learning more effectively.
The Ottumwa School District started the brain health room program at Evans this fall, building on its success at Ottumwa High School. The goal is simple: help students deal with distractions or overwhelming feelings. Freshman Manaswee Dixit shared, “I come in here when I need a break. Writing affirmations on the board or playing with stuffed animals helps me feel better.”
Students can drop in and fill out a quick form. Jessica Dawdy, the Brain Health Liaison, explains, “Just 15 minutes can help students regain control of their emotions.” She emphasizes the importance of problem-solving in tough situations, like feeling stressed about a test or facing issues at home.
Options are available to help students reset. They can find a quiet corner, use fidget toys, or chat with Dawdy about their problems. Freshman Yanelis Recarey says, “I refresh here. Sometimes I take a power nap if I’m stressed.”
Dawdy notes that this program is crucial for students going through a difficult phase in their lives. She has already noticed significant improvements in grades and attendance. “Having a safe space makes a real difference. Students are less late and more focused,” she says.
