Discover How Our Pop-Up Farmstand is Tackling Food Insecurity in Your Community

HOLYOKE, MA – As Thanksgiving approaches, many families are facing challenges with their SNAP benefits. To lend a helping hand, Red Fire Farm is stepping up by offering free fresh produce to those in need. This initiative is aimed at supporting local families grappling with food insecurity.

One local resident, Kerry Nolan, visited the farm to pick up produce for her daughter and grandchildren, who depend on SNAP benefits. “I really appreciate the community giving back,” she said. “It’s important to use food instead of wasting it.”

Starting Wednesday, Red Fire Farm opened a pop-up shed where anyone on SNAP or facing food insecurity can pick up fresh vegetables and fruits. Farm employee Nick Coucke emphasized the urgency of this service, saying, “Everyone needs food. It’s a basic human right, and we feel responsible for helping our community.”

While the Commonwealth will release benefits soon, many still struggle due to funding shortages and rising costs. The farm reported that they have an abundance of seasonal produce, including kale, lettuce, radishes, potatoes, and onions, which are available for those in need.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, Nolan noted that many families may prioritize staples over fresh produce during difficult times. The free produce shed will be open every Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m.

According to a recent study by Feeding America, over 34 million people in the U.S. face food insecurity, including nearly 10 million children. Community farming initiatives like Red Fire Farm can significantly help combat this issue.

So, if you’re in the neighborhood, check out the farm’s efforts. They also welcome donations of non-perishable foods, which can make a big difference for vulnerable families.
