In a significant move towards improving air quality, Punjab is rolling out a series of ambitious projects aimed at tackling the region’s persistent smog issues. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb shared the exciting news that, for the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual development programs are being finalized earlier than usual, thanks to the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
These new initiatives include the distribution of 20,000 super seeders and various equipment to reduce crop burning, a major contributor to air pollution. To curb the smog problem, 15 anti-smog guns have already trimmed PM10 levels by 30 to 45 percent. Furthermore, the government plans to invest Rs. 3 billion in fog cannons to combat urban dust and pollution.
Aurangzeb also noted plans to relocate industries from Lahore before the next smog season. Efforts to promote plastic-free zones are underway, and a new electric vehicle initiative aims to phase out harmful two- and three-wheelers.
The Punjab Climate Observatory is set to be established soon, and new laws, such as the Punjab Climate Change Act, will soon be presented to the cabinet. Plans include a Rs. 2.25 billion allocation to enhance the Lahore Air Improvement Framework. This initiative will allow for real-time tracking of pollution sources across the city.
More than 50 modern air quality monitors are now functional in Punjab, and the introduction of an automated quality assurance system will help maintain data accuracy. Five rivers are already monitored for water quality, checking vital parameters that impact public health.
The fight against plastic bags continues, with authorities seizing over 461,000 kilograms of banned plastics. Major shopping areas in Lahore are now designated as plastic-free zones, striving to improve environmental health.
The EPA has undergone a complete digital overhaul, making it easier to manage cases online and to ensure transparency. Two training centers are now operational, and a green banking ecosystem is on the horizon to promote sustainable entrepreneurship.
As part of its comprehensive strategy, Punjab plans to allocate significant funding for various environmental projects. Future developments include an Environmental Museum and Eco-Amusement Park in Lahore, aimed at fostering awareness and creating green jobs.
