The 71st meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council is underway in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. This event is a lead-up to the Eighth GEF Assembly and the Eco Expo Central Asia 2026.
Representatives from 186 member countries, along with various organizations and experts, have gathered here. They will discuss over $200 million in funding for environmental and climate projects. The goal? To set a course for international cooperation from 2026 to 2030.
At the opening, Aziz Abdukhakimov, an advisor to Uzbekistan’s president on environmental issues, and Carlos Gascón, CEO of the GEF, spoke about the event’s significance. Abdukhakimov highlighted Samarkand’s historic role as a crossroads for cultures. He noted that the theme of the upcoming Assembly, “The Last Push to 2030,” is especially relevant due to rising climate change impacts.
Uzbekistan values its partnership with the GEF. With their support, the country is working on projects that focus on biodiversity, climate resilience, and the restoration of the Aral Sea region ecosystems. Currently, Uzbekistan has 13 projects funded by the GEF, totaling $56 million. Moreover, five new projects worth over $30 million are in the pipeline.
The discussions will also cover ocean and biodiversity conservation, sustainable infrastructure, and innovative financing for environmental initiatives. A special emphasis will be placed on renewable energy projects in Uzbekistan.
A significant topic will be strengthening the role of civil society and local communities in achieving global environmental goals. Before the Assembly, the GEF Civil Society Organizations Forum will be held, providing a space for sharing ideas and initiatives.
The official opening of the Eighth GEF Assembly is set for June 4. This event reinforces Uzbekistan’s role as a vital hub for international environmental discussions.
