Indian Railways is gearing up to offer a faster and more comfortable travel experience with the announcement of seven new high-speed rail corridors. This initiative, shared by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Union Budget speech, aims to provide quicker connectivity between major cities.
Currently, India is constructing its first bullet train line between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, set to start operating soon. While bullet trains can reach speeds of 300 km/h, high-speed rail typically operates at about 220-250 km/h.
The New High-Speed Rail Corridors
Here are the seven proposed corridors and their expected travel times:
- Mumbai–Pune: Travel time will drop to just 48 minutes.
- Pune–Hyderabad: This route will take about 1 hour 55 minutes.
- Hyderabad–Bengaluru: Expect travel to be around 2 hours.
- Hyderabad–Chennai: Journey time will be roughly 2 hours 55 minutes.
- Chennai–Bengaluru: This corridor will lengthen the trip to about 1 hour 13 minutes.
- Delhi–Varanasi: Travel will take around 3 hours 50 minutes.
- Varanasi–Siliguri: This will enhance travel to approximately 2 hours 55 minutes.
These corridors will cover around 4,000 km and require an estimated investment of ₹16-20 lakh crore. According to Anurag Gupta from Deloitte, this transformation will significantly enhance passenger movement and stimulate economic growth.

Jagannarayan Padmanabhan from Crisil Intelligence notes that high-speed rail meets the growing demand for efficient travel. The corridors aim to alleviate congestion by offering a reliable alternative to road and air travel.
G Raghuram, an infrastructure expert, highlights the potential economic impact. He emphasizes that while faster travel is a key benefit, funding remains a significant concern. “Where will we get the money for these ambitious projects?” he questions, raising valid points about the challenges ahead.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
As part of the overall upgrade, Indian Railways is also introducing Vande Bharat sleeper trains. These state-of-the-art trains promise a better overnight travel experience and are intended to compete with flights for long-distance journeys. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishaw stated that 260 of these sleeper sets are planned for rollout.
Vande Bharat trains prioritize passenger comfort, featuring advanced safety systems and several modern amenities. Travel prices for the sleeper trains are fixed per kilometer, avoiding the unpredictability of dynamic pricing.
The Road Ahead
By 2047, India aims to have around 4,500 Vande Bharat trains in operation, with about 800 ready by 2030. This initiative not only aims to improve inter-city connectivity but also supports Indian Railways’ long-term goal of handling 3,000 million tonnes of freight annually.
