Raúl García Brink, the Minister of Environment, recently visited the ongoing efforts under the Impulsa Maspalomas project. The project involves a substantial investment of €664,373 aimed at boosting safety, control, and visitor information in the reserve. It focuses on three key areas: smart signage, digital content, and security systems. A network of sensors acts as the “digital eyes and ears,” providing valuable real-time data to enhance both environmental protection and the enjoyment of the Dunes.
“We’re advancing in smart management and improving the information available to visitors,” said García Brink. He emphasized that technology should protect this delicate environment while ensuring a safe experience that respects its natural value.
The sensors placed along trails monitor visitor flow, helping to prevent overcrowding. They anonymously capture signals from mobile devices, allowing officials to understand movement patterns without compromising personal privacy. This data is crucial for making informed decisions that lessen the human impact on this fragile ecosystem.
Additionally, SOS posts equipped with emergency systems and solar power have been installed along trails for added safety. Smart cameras have also been set up at key access points like the Mirador de las Dunas. These cameras analyze visitor numbers and detect unauthorized access, processing only statistical data to uphold privacy.
The initiative also includes nearly 200 new signage panels that guide visitors and inform them about conservation rules. Many boards feature QR codes linking to digital content in various languages. This information covers everything from the unique flora and fauna to the history of the dunes.
The project aims to blend conservation with sustainable tourism, ensuring that the natural beauty of the Maspalomas Dunes is preserved while providing vital information and awareness to both locals and tourists.
