Before serving delicious soul food and burgers in Martin, Quincey Porter began his culinary journey in Memphis. He started by selling $6 plates from his mother-in-law’s living room. Fast forward to July 21, 2025, and Martin welcomed The Food Genie, owned by Quincey and his wife, Mechele. They have been delighting customers since 2017.
The Porters’ journey began with humble beginnings. Quincey balanced his restaurant duties with leading Bible studies and workout classes. One day, a friend joked that Quincey was like a genie, and thus, The Food Genie was born. They quickly moved from the living room to a small kitchen inside a gas station. After a year, they relocated again to focus on catering and opened locations in Trezevant and Union City.
By 2024, a vacant building on Hurt Street caught their eye. Mechele recalled how Quincey had even prayed there years before. Now, it’s home to a thriving restaurant that has quickly become a community hotspot. Students and local families flock to The Food Genie, and Mechele proudly offers a 10% discount to University of Tennessee at Martin students and staff.
One of the most popular items is “The Genie Burger,” featuring bacon, egg, and cheese. Quincey has a favorite too—the “Philadelphia Burger,” stacked high with double cheese, a Philly cheesesteak, and more. The Porters often cater for birthdays, weddings, and corporate events, thanks to their delicious offerings.
Quincey, also a minister, sees the restaurant as a way to connect with the community. Customers often ask him for prayers while waiting for their meals. “If someone asks for prayer, I’m happy to help,” he says. This personal touch sets The Food Genie apart.
In addition to serving food, the Porters contribute to local causes. They support the Captain’s Pantry at UT Martin, recently donating 32 emergency food boxes for students in need. It’s clear The Food Genie is more than just a restaurant; it’s a vital part of the community.
The restaurant’s first anniversary in Martin is coming up, and they plan a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 17, 2026. The community’s support has been overwhelming, showing the power of love, food, and faith in building a successful business.
As a small business, The Food Genie reflects a growing trend in local dining. According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, 80% of consumers prefer to support local restaurants. Quincey and Mechele are not just feeding their community; they are also fostering a sense of belonging and support.
