Meet Jenifer L. Lewis, PhD, the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU). She brings a rich background in education and leadership, with a passion for liberal arts and a commitment to Christian values.
Growing up in a military family, Jenifer moved around a lot but eventually calls Kansas home. Her academic journey started at Washburn University, where she celebrated the holistic benefits of a liberal arts education that shaped her worldview.
She then earned her master’s and PhD in communication from the University of Kansas. It was during this time that she found her love for communication dynamics and leadership, sparking her dream of becoming a university professor.
Jenifer’s career took an exciting turn in 2011 when she joined Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan. As part of the founding faculty, she contributed to shaping a new educational experience for students, starting with just 500 enrollments and now serving 7,500 students.
Over the years, Jenifer held several important roles at Nazarbayev, including vice dean of the Graduate School of Business. Her leadership helped the school achieve its first international accreditation, marking a significant step toward academic excellence.
Similar to MNU’s own beginnings, Jenifer’s journey at Nazarbayev reflects her ability to build and nurture academic communities. “Dr. Lewis combines a deep desire to learn with a wealth of experience,” says Dr. Abby Hodges, MNU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. “We are thrilled to have her with us.”
Alongside her leadership roles, Jenifer is an active researcher. She focuses on women in leadership, exploring barriers faced by women in Kazakhstan organizations. “I’m interested in how these insights can apply both locally and internationally,” she notes. While research is important to her, her true passion lies in supporting students and faculty.
In her new role, Jenifer is excited to enhance liberal arts education at MNU. She believes in nurturing critical thinking and a servant-leader attitude among students, preparing them for the challenges of today’s world. “We need to help students make thoughtful decisions and understand their impact,” she explains. “It’s a privilege, a joy, and a responsibility.”
This is Jenifer’s first experience in Christian higher education. She views it as a way to integrate her faith deeply into her work and to foster discussions on living and leading as a Christian. “Believers must engage in the world, working towards a more civil and peaceful society,” she emphasizes.
Jenifer’s husband, Dr. Jason Lewis, shares her dedication to education. With a PhD in Intercultural Studies, he continues his research while supporting churches in Kazakhstan. Together, they raise two children, Maya and Asher. After sensing a calling to return to the U.S., they chose Kansas as their new home.
As she steps into her role, Jenifer aims to build on MNU’s existing strengths while seeking new opportunities for growth. Creating a supportive environment for faculty and students is her top priority. Reflecting on her journey, she recognizes how faith has guided her path—from her childhood in Kansas to Kazakhstan, and now at MNU. Jenifer Lewis is ready to inspire a new generation of students and faculty to pursue excellence and live out their faith in impactful ways.
