Mars Petcare has partnered with Big Idea Ventures and others to launch the Next Generation Pet Food Program, aimed at reshaping pet nutrition for a sustainable future. This initiative focuses on innovative technologies in nutrition, utilizing biotech ingredients and promoting circular feed solutions.
In 2024, they began this exciting program along with AAK, known for its plant-based oils, and Bühler, experts in food technology. This year’s cohort received a whopping 165 applications from around the world, with many submissions coming from Asia. The sheer global interest highlights the push for sustainability in pet care.
The panel of experts evaluated the entries for innovation, sustainability, and commercial potential. Three standout startups were chosen for this year’s program:
ALT-PRO Advantage: Based in Canada, this company utilizes illuminated fermentation to naturally create essential nutrients like taurine for pet food.
Seaqure Labs: From Sweden, this biotech startup uses mycelium to turn industrial waste into nutritious aquafeed ingredients, aiming to lessen environmental impact.
Terramatter: An Indian company that transforms industrial by-products into fermented proteins, making sustainable options for pet food and meat alternatives.
Experts in the field have noted how these companies are paving the way for a greener pet food industry. Andrew D. Ive from Big Idea Ventures emphasizes the importance of turning ideas into innovations that benefit pets, people, and the planet.
Elisabetta Pierangelo from Mars highlights how these startups address accessibility and security in pet food ingredients, aiming to lessen the industry’s environmental footprint.
Participants in the program will receive mentorship and access to advanced research facilities. They are set to present their ideas at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in Singapore from November 4-6, a key opportunity to attract global attention and investment.
This initiative is a vital step towards a future where pet nutrition prioritizes both health and sustainability, echoing a wider trend across the consumer landscape focusing on eco-friendly practices.
