Discover How This YouTuber Revives Nintendo’s Elusive First Arcade Game!

Nintendo’s history goes beyond gaming; they started out making toys and Hanafuda cards. Before changing the gaming world, their earlier games were less famous. One of the rarest is Wild Gunman, the company’s first arcade game. For years, there was no proof that a working cabinet existed. But that changed when Canadian arcade repairman and YouTuber Callan “74XX” Brown decided to rebuild one using original parts.

In July 2025, Brown stumbled upon an intriguing auction on eBay featuring Nintendo-branded film reels. “It didn’t make a lot of sense to me,” he explained in his video. These reels are vital for Wild Gunman, which debuted in 1974. Unlike a typical video game, it used two film projectors to create a shooting experience. Gamers used a light gun to interact with the film, making winning or losing shots based on their aim. Gunpei Yokoi, who designed the game, opted for durable materials, but he was aware they’d only last through about 1,000 playthroughs.

Over the years, surviving copies of Wild Gunman reels have become incredibly rare. Historian Kate Willært suggested in 2021 that the best footage of the game might be hidden in an underground short film or even in an old comedy called Gas. That same year, two reels were discovered, reigniting interest in this lost piece of gaming history.

When Brown acquired the film reels, he saw their potential. After winning the auction, he bought a 16mm classroom projector. Watching the reels for the first time in nearly 40 years was a thrill. He then digitized the footage and began recreating the cabinet. By reverse engineering patents and using open-source tools, he crafted a modern version of Wild Gunman. This new cabinet will project the restored footage, preserving it for future fans.

Brown plans to showcase his work at local events like Ontario PinFest, where he hopes to share what might be the only playable Wild Gunman cabinet in North America—and possibly, the world.

This project reflects how nostalgia fuels the gaming community. Enthusiasts often rally around vintage games, breathing new life into forgotten pieces of history. With a mix of passion and technology, Brown is making sure players can experience this classic game once again.
