Shri Rao emphasized ICF’s growing role in India’s railway industry, particularly through its contributions to the Make in India initiative. ICF produces the Vande Bharat trains, which are 90% made in India. They are also working on the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, paving the way for a greener future in rail travel.

Shri Rao has a rich background in the Indian Railways, having joined in 1989. His experience ranges from rolling stock maintenance to coach manufacturing. Notably, he led initiatives like achieving a record production of 200,000 wheels in one year while serving as Chief Workshop Engineer. His expertise helps him understand the needs and pain points of passengers, shaping strategic decisions for ICF.
### Achievements at ICF
Since 2018, ICF has been on a new journey with the Vande Bharat project. Production has evolved from 16-car to 20-car trains, responding to passenger demand. Currently, ICF has manufactured over 18 of these popular trains, demonstrating its adaptability.
### Meeting Demand
ICF is often called upon to tackle new projects in the rail sector. Recently, they’ve been tasked with producing 50 Amrit Bharat trains, which will improve passenger comfort with better seating arrangements and enhanced facilities without air conditioning.
ICF’s manufacturing capacity is on a steady rise. Last year, they produced 3,007 coaches and aim for 4,000 this year, responding to an increasing demand for trains.
### Innovations and Future Projects
The Vande Bharat remains a flagship of the Make in India initiative. ICF’s modular sourcing approach ensures that while some components come from external suppliers, the core technology and design rest with ICF. With plans to develop a sleeper version of Vande Bharat and even freight variants, ICF is positioning itself for future growth.
Moreover, they’re collaborating on the Hyperloop project, lending their expertise to ensure high-quality development.
### Embracing Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of ICF’s operations. They are already carbon-neutral, generating surplus energy from windmills and solar panels. Furthermore, ICF is dedicated to reducing freshwater usage and managing waste effectively.
### Hydrogen-Powered Trains
ICF is also at the forefront of developing hydrogen-powered trains. Their current model serves as a technology demonstrator, offering insights into the feasibility of hydrogen trains for diverse applications.
