Ikea just gave us a sneak peek of exciting new pieces from their upcoming experimental collection, set to be fully unveiled at their annual event on May 13th. One standout item? An inflatable chair that’s a major upgrade from the wobbly furniture of the ‘90s.
Ikea has dabbled with inflatable designs before. Back in 2000, they launched the Rolig chair and Innerlig sofa, but those were plagued with issues like pricey costs and leaky valves. They did find more success with inflatable kids’ items, but now designer Mikael Axelsson is taking another shot at it for the 2026 PS collection.
The new chair is not just your typical inflatable. It features two adjustable air chambers wrapped in a stylish emerald green fabric, all supported by a sturdy carbon steel frame. This design prevents awkward bulging and keeps the chair steady, even if bumped. Ikea claims it has passed all their durability tests.
In addition to the inflatable chair, Ikea teased two more innovative pieces. Designer Marta Krupińska has created a solid pine bench with curved runners, allowing it to rock gently, like a pair of side-by-side rocking horses. Also, Lex Pott introduced a floor lamp with segments that can rotate, directing light where you want it—perfect for reading!
Inflatable furniture is experiencing a resurgence. Recent trends show that consumers are eager for flexible and space-saving options as living spaces get smaller. A study from the National Association of Home Builders notes that 62% of new homes now have less square footage, highlighting the need for furniture that adapts easily.
