The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently unveiled a model of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) in Delhi. This event took place on the eve of National Space Day, celebrated on August 23. India is on track to launch its first space station module by 2028, making it one of the few countries with an operational space station.
Currently, only two space stations exist: the International Space Station (ISS) and China’s Tiangong Space Station. ISRO plans to deploy five modules of BAS by 2035, with the first one, BAS-01, weighing about 10 tonnes. It will be placed in low Earth orbit at an altitude of 450 kilometers.
The BAS will feature some impressive technology, including:
- Life Support System: Keeps the environment safe for astronauts.
- Docking System: Uses Indian technology to connect modules easily.
- Automatic Hatch System: Facilitates safe movement between modules.
- Microgravity Research Platform: Supports experiments in zero gravity.
- Observation Windows: For experiments and photography.
- Refueling Capability: Allows fuel and fluids to be replenished.
- Spacewalk Support: Equipped with suits and airlocks for external work.
According to ISRO, the deployment of BAS is a significant milestone for India. It represents the nation’s growing strength in space exploration, which is crucial for scientific research and education.
A recent survey found that nearly 70% of people in India are excited about the country’s advancements in space technology. Social media trends show a surge of support and optimism as many shared their dreams of future space adventures.
In 2021, India became the fourth country to achieve a successful Mars mission with Mangalyaan, showcasing its expertise in space exploration. The planned launch of the BAS could further strengthen India’s position globally.
