India is set to enhance its rail travel experience with the launch of its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train in September 2025. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this exciting news during a recent event in Gujarat.

This new sleeper train aims to make long-distance journeys more comfortable and efficient, building on the success of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat fleet. The initiative is part of a larger goal to transform railway travel in India, alongside other modern services like Namo Bharat and Amrit Bharat.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train will be constructed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) with help from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). It will feature 16 coaches and provide accommodations in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier categories, operating at speeds of up to 180 km/h. With this development, overnight travel will become more appealing, especially for middle-class families.

Here are some of the exciting features to look forward to:

• Real-time passenger information systems
• USB-integrated reading lamps
• CCTV for safety
• Modular pantries
• Hot-water showers in AC First Class
• Accessible facilities for differently-abled passengers
• Touch-free bio-vacuum toilets
• Talk-back units for in-coach communication
• Sensor-based interconnecting doors

Safety has also been prioritized, with features like the Kavach anti-collision system and emergency braking throughout the train.

While the specific routes are still being finalized, potential options include:

• New Delhi to Howrah
• New Delhi to Mumbai
• New Delhi to Pune
• New Delhi to Secunderabad

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the Vande Bharat services will remain affordable, providing a luxurious yet cost-effective alternative to air travel. This aligns with the growing demand for better public transport amid rising airfares and environmental concerns.

As we look toward the 2025 launch, the Vande Bharat Sleeper train is expected to redefine overnight journeys in India, combining speed, comfort, and modern amenities. By prioritizing accessibility and affordability, this train could significantly change the way people travel across the country.
