A climate-focused media program took place in Istanbul and Kocaeli from March 27 to 29, 2026. This event, organized by the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, aimed to raise awareness ahead of the upcoming COP31 Summit that Türkiye will host in November.
Seventeen journalists from eight different countries attended the “Road to COP31: Sustainable Future International Media Program.” The event showcased Türkiye’s environmental policies and sustainable development goals. Journalists received updates on the country’s battle against climate change and its innovative practices in environmental management.
One highlight was a visit to the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Centre, where participants explored advanced technologies for monitoring water quality and air pollution. This center is at the forefront of environmental research, pushing boundaries with its scientific initiatives.
In Kocaeli, the journalists witnessed marine conservation efforts, including seabed sludge removal and marine litter collection in the Izmit Gulf. These operations illustrate Türkiye’s commitment to preserving marine ecosystems.
The media program has five distinct tours scheduled until November, allowing for deeper insights into Türkiye’s sustainability projects.
Officials, including Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Assoc. Prof. Tahir Büyükakın and experts from TÜBİTAK, contributed valuable perspectives during the event. Their involvement emphasizes a collaborative approach to addressing climate issues.
This program is crucial as climate change becomes increasingly pressing. A study by the IPCC highlights that global temperatures could rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius as early as 2030 if current trends continue. Initiatives like this aim to foster international dialogue and action.
