World@VCU is a VCU News feature highlighting students from around the globe who enrich the Virginia Commonwealth University community. Today, we’ll hear from Joshua Maus, a public administration student at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.
About Germany
Germany is often seen through a lens of sausages and Oktoberfest. While these are fun, they’re not the full picture. Germans share many everyday interests with Americans, like enjoying Netflix and favorite sports. Beyond stereotypes, there’s a rich culture to explore.
Why VCU?
Joshua chose VCU because it partnered with his home university, Bauhaus University in Weimar. He appreciates VCU’s size, diverse community, and variety of cultural events and courses, which he finds unique compared to his studies back home.
A Memorable Experience
One standout moment was attending a conference on global leadership with the Global Education Office. It featured speakers from various backgrounds and was very interactive. Joshua loved connecting with both speakers and attendees, making it a highlight of his time here.
Unexpected Surprises
Joshua faced surprises upon arrival. He found the dorms furnished but lacking essentials like blankets and kitchenware, prompting his first shopping trip in the U.S. Also, he was pleasantly surprised by the approachable nature of his professors compared to those in Germany, where he felt they were more formal.
A New Achievement
During his studies, Joshua used urban planning software for the first time, which helped his group visualize their project. He felt proud of what he created, marking a significant achievement in his coursework.
Free Time Activities
In his leisure time, Joshua enjoys morning walks in beautiful Richmond neighborhoods like the Fan District and Oregon Hill. He actively participates in various clubs, including the Urban Planners Club and a baking club called Sugar Shelter. These activities help him meet new friends and combat any feelings of loneliness.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Joshua dreams of pursuing a master’s degree in Norway. He aims to make cities more sustainable and accessible through urban planning. He recognizes the challenges of his field, understanding that past planners often made choices with good intentions that may not have worked out. Joshua hopes to positively impact communities and create better urban environments.
Advice for New International Students
For students just starting their journey, Joshua offers three tips. First, engage actively by attending events to meet people. Second, don’t stress too much about coursework; syllabuses can seem overwhelming, but classes are manageable. Lastly, embrace an open mindset by saying “yes” to new experiences. This attitude has allowed Joshua to explore opportunities he might not have considered back home.
