KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jeff Lodermeier’s journey started on a farm in Minnesota. His first major move was to Kansas City, thanks to family ties. “I have an aunt and uncle here in Leawood,” he shares. “When my cousin graduated from Rockhurst College, my parents thought Kansas City could be a good place for me.”
With a scholarship in international relations, Jeff packed his bags and moved to Kansas City from 1988 to 1992. Afterward, he joined the U.S. State Department, working as a foreign service officer in places like Afghanistan, Angola, Brazil, Iraq, and Kenya. His career took him around the globe, but last August, he returned to Kansas City in a new role.
Now, Lodermeier is a foreign affairs advisor for Mayor Quinton Lucas, thanks to the Local Diplomat Program. “When the opportunity arose, Kansas City stood out to me. The upcoming World Cup added to that appeal,” he says.
His job focuses on attracting foreign investments, supporting refugees, and helping prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will host six games at Arrowhead Stadium. “Kansas City rarely gets global attention, but the World Cup will shine a spotlight on us,” Lucas notes. “We want to showcase our city internationally.”
Lodermeier is keen on introducing the mayor and local leaders to embassies worldwide. “I know what those embassies want to hear,” he explains. “I used to work in them. When I call and say, ‘Your team is coming to Kansas City,’ they are excited to learn more.”
Besides the World Cup, Lodermeier is also working on restoring international flights to places like Canada and Mexico. He aims to boost business opportunities and improve language resources in the city. “The World Cup is a unique chance for us,” he says.
Lucas believes this is about more than just events. “We need to find ways to weave this into daily life in Kansas City. Jeff’s expertise is essential for that.”
Lodermeier, who has extended his role through August 2026, is excited for what the World Cup will bring. “People are familiar with cities like New York and Miami. Kansas City is a new discovery for many,” he says. “When they get here, they’ll be impressed by our hospitality.”
He’s confident that Kansas City will impress visitors. “We just have to be ourselves. We’re ready for this challenge, and there’s a buzz in the city about 2026,” he adds.
Other cities, like San Diego and Chattanooga, have also welcomed State Department liaisons through this program, but right now, all eyes are on Kansas City.
