One artist, Ashaolu Oluwafemi, emphasized the festival’s spirit. “It brings art to people who might not usually visit galleries,” he explained. He believes that street art can tell the unique stories of Lagos and its residents.
The artworks adorn Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, a busy strip in Victoria Island. Oluwafemi, born in Lagos, feels that the city’s strength and resilience inspire his work. He advocates that navigating life in Lagos requires wisdom and perseverance.
While Lagos is known for its night life and culture, street art hasn’t received as much attention compared to other African cities. Painter Ernest Ibe noted, “It’s a challenge, but awareness is growing.” He expressed hope that murals could change how people perceive public spaces.
Statistics show that urban art can create a sense of community. A recent survey by the Urban Land Institute found that 86% of respondents believe public art enhances the appeal of city spaces. This growing acknowledgment could pave the way for the rise of street art in Lagos.
At the festival, multiple artists, including international names, showcased their styles. Babalola Oluwafemi from Manchester highlighted the joy and vibrance of Lagos life in her mural featuring a peacock. “The peacock symbolizes beauty and pride in our culture,” she said, linking her artwork to the essence of Lagos.
Lagosians responded enthusiastically to the art. Ashaolu noted, “People connect with what they see on the streets.” The joy reflected in the murals resonates deeply with locals.
The festival kicked off recently and runs until December 15. Importantly, the art is set to remain visible to the public, allowing Lagosians and visitors alike to enjoy this cultural richness long after the festival concludes.
