Today, Brazil unveiled Maloca, a groundbreaking digital platform aimed at enhancing participation in climate discussions during COP30. This initiative is set to be a legacy of the conference, offering an open space for dialogue and collaboration. It’s particularly significant for voices from the Global South, ensuring diverse perspectives shape climate policies.
Maloca highlights three key goals: strengthening international cooperation, linking climate initiatives to everyday life, and boosting the efforts of the Paris Agreement. The platform allows governments, civil society, and communities to share ideas and engage directly in the climate conversation, extending the reach of COP30 beyond Belém.
At the launch, COP30 President-Designate, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, announced the opening of Maloca’s registration system. Civil society organizations can now apply to host discussions, enabling them to share solutions and contribute to the climate agenda.
Developed in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Maloca is accessible through both a website and mobile app (available on Google Play and App Store). This digital gateway eliminates geographical barriers, making the conference open to everyone, everywhere.
Ambassador Corrêa do Lago emphasized the importance of inclusivity: “With Maloca, we aim to ensure this COP is accessible to all and to inspire trust in collective efforts against climate change.” COP30 CEO Ana Toni echoed this sentiment, stating that Maloca will facilitate ongoing dialogues throughout the year.
According to UNDP’s Marcos Neto, Maloca is set to engage millions virtually, showcasing global collaboration and innovative solutions on climate issues. The platform supports AI-powered translation in seven languages, enabling real-time interaction across cultures. It can host up to 7,200 events in 20 virtual settings during the 15 days of COP30 and features Macaozinho, an AI climate assistant that sources reliable information from official UN documents.
Maloca’s development began prior to COP29 in Baku and was implemented during New York Climate Week, where it facilitated various events. So far, it has attracted over 4,000 users from multiple continents.
As part of the Route to Belém initiative, Maloca represents a new model for inclusive climate engagement, signaling that the fight against climate change involves everyone. With this platform, the Brazilian Presidency is ensuring that the efforts of COP30 will have a lasting impact, reaching beyond the conference itself.
