Discover Mappls: India’s Local Alternative to Google Maps Driving the Swadeshi Tech Revolution

After the success of apps like Arattai and Zoho, India’s tech scene is buzzing with excitement. The government is now supporting Mappls, a homegrown alternative to Google Maps from MapmyIndia.

Recently, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised Mappls in a video, emphasizing its features and labeling it a “must-try” under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. He highlighted how this app can enhance navigation, especially for Indian Railways, with plans for a partnership to improve services across the country.

One standout feature of Mappls is its 3D junction view. This helps users avoid mistakes like taking wrong turns near bridges and underpasses. Vaishnaw pointed out that the app can even direct users inside multi-story buildings, making navigation simpler and safer.

While Google Maps is widely used, it has faced criticism for wrongly directing users, leading to dangerous situations. For example, in November 2024, three people tragically lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh due to misleading navigation. Mappls aims to prevent such incidents by providing accurate and reliable directions while keeping all user data stored within India, addressing privacy concerns.

MapmyIndia is also taking bold steps by partnering with India Post to create the nation’s first digital address system, DIGIPIN. This innovative system assigns a digital code to each 3.8-square-meter area, enhancing address precision for various needs, including deliveries and logistics. Rakesh Verma, the co-founder of MapmyIndia, noted that this integration will allow users to pinpoint exact locations, making navigation much easier, especially in rural areas.

The government’s push for Mappls exemplifies India’s commitment to supporting local technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant digital India is reflected in such initiatives. Following the endorsement of Arattai, another Indian app that gained popularity after ministerial support, Mappls is riding a similar wave of excitement as it steps into the spotlight.
