World@VCU is a feature that showcases how international students like Angela Vega Vega add to the Virginia Commonwealth University community. Angela is a senior studying fashion design and merchandising.
What drew you to VCU?
I’m pretty laid-back. I spent a year in Washington, D.C., then moved to Richmond, thinking it would just be temporary. My host mom suggested I look into VCU’s programs in fashion. When I contacted them, they encouraged me to send in my portfolio. At first, I wasn’t sure about committing long-term, but after talking it over with my parents, I decided to give it a shot. Everything seemed to fall into place after that.
What surprised you during your time abroad?
I studied in Italy for nine months, and it was funny to be going “abroad from abroad.” Richmond feels like home now. While I cherish my Mexican roots, I realize that living in the U.S. for five years has changed how I fit in. It’s surprising to feel a bit of a stranger in my own country because I’ve spent so much time here.
What’s a project you’re proud of?
My friend Benicio and I received a grant to research vegan leather. It was a tough process, but it showed us that this could be something we pursue long-term, not just a class project. Even though we paused the work to gain more knowledge, we feel accomplished for not giving up. That determination is significant to us.
What do you enjoy in your leisure time?
I love staying active. The VCU gym is often crowded, but I found a quiet racquetball court. After watching some YouTube videos, I started playing. I’m still learning, but it’s fun!
What’s next for you?
I dream of starting my own fashion house. Right now, I’m focused on job applications. As an international student, it’s challenging to find jobs, especially with work permits. Still, I’m aiming for opportunities in New York. I’ve put in the effort at VCU, and I want to give my all in one of the world’s fashion capitals. If it’s meant to be, it will happen, and if not, maybe another city is waiting for me.
What advice do you have for incoming international students?
Dive in and explore! Living abroad will push you out of your comfort zone. You’ll discover parts of yourself you didn’t know existed. Remember, you’re not alone; VCU has a strong support system ready to help you.
Also, take time to celebrate your journey. Moving away from everything familiar is a big step, and you’re creating a new home in a different place. Recognize and honor that achievement!
