Discover Milki Ethiopian Cafe: A Fresh Culinary Gem in Portland’s Former Yigebe Space – Bridgetown Bites

There’s a new spot in Rose City Park: Milki Ethiopian Cafe. It recently took over the old Yigebe Coffee location on NE Sandy Blvd. This new cafe is already making waves by serving coffee, treats, and traditional Ethiopian meals.

Yigebe Coffee has closed its doors—not without some community chatter. Recently, a local posted about the closure on Nextdoor, sharing concerns about the end of Yigebe Coffee. Others noted that a change of ownership could still keep the vibe going, hinting at similarities in the menu. Indeed, Milki Ethiopian Cafe has already opened softly, inviting visitors to check it out ahead of its grand opening.

As I’m driving past, I spot a sign for Milki and see it’s set to launch officially on Saturday, October 25. Intrigued, I stop by on my way back. The woman behind the counter is warm and friendly. She explains the cafe’s name comes from her six-month-old daughter, Milki, which means “fortune” in Amharic.

What’s On The Menu

The drink menu is refreshing. You can choose from hot or iced coffee, various teas, and even a ginger-lime tonic that caught my attention. The tonic is a unique blend of fresh ginger juice, lime, and tonic water, typically served warm. I decided to try it hot, a change I enjoyed. Its slight bitterness was a pleasant surprise, and it felt comforting.

Food Offerings

Pastries are available now, but visitors can anticipate Ethiopian dishes soon. The food truck outside will also enhance the variety on the menu.

The cafe’s interior remains much like what Yigebe offered, making it feel familiar. Many neighbors are excited, expressing hope that the cafe continues to thrive. One local remarked how nice it is to have a cozy spot for coffee and a taste of new dishes in the area.

Milki Ethiopian Cafe is more than just a new name in town—it’s a blend of tradition and community spirit. As it prepares for a grand opening, owner Muhidin Abbachabsa looks ready to breathe new life into this beloved spot with delicious drinks and food.
