AVONDALE — A new vibe has landed at the corner of Belmont and California avenues. Moody’s Market is now open at 2755 W. Belmont Ave. This shop is a collaboration among four friends: Mollie Mettelka, Michael Portanova, Melissa Korth, and Alaine Johnson. They envision it as a community spot for locally sourced goods, prepared foods, and vintage treasures.

The idea for Moody’s came together when Mettelka, a pastry chef from the previous restaurant Tutore, found herself with an opportunity after it closed. With experience in culinary arts and interior design, the friends pooled their talents to create something special. In under two months, they quit their jobs, crafted a menu, redesigned the space, and filled it with local snacks, art, and unique finds.

Portanova, the head chef, has a rich culinary background, having opened restaurants in various cities. Mettelka and Korth lead the pastry side, while Johnson curates vintage items. Their diverse skills come together beautifully. “When we discussed it, our worlds collided,” said Johnson. “We wanted to create something meaningful.”

The menu features items made by Portanova, like savory sauces and dishes, showcasing seasonal vegetables from local farms. “The idea is to help people create a meal quickly,” he explains. Prices are reasonable, with pints of salsa ranging from $5 to $8, and protein meals priced between $15 and $20.

Moody’s isn’t just about food. There’s a selection of wines, cheeses, and party accessories. The founders aim to offer items that feel special and aren’t available everywhere. Johnson’s family contributes with handmade candles, while Korth’s designs dog scarves for the winter season.

One unique aspect of Moody’s is its name. “We wanted to embrace the idea of being ‘moody’ in a positive way,” Mettelka shares. This philosophy is reflected in their decor and offerings.

With a large, communal table in the market, they plan to host events like cooking classes, knitting nights, and movie screenings. The shop had a soft opening recently and is gearing up for a grand opening over Labor Day weekend. Moody’s Market is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The concept of community markets has been on the rise, with 60% of consumers expressing a preference for locally sourced products, according to a recent survey by the Local Food Marketplace. Moody’s fits perfectly into this trend, offering not just food but a gathering place for neighbors.
