Indian Railways boasts some impressive trains, but let’s not overlook Nepal’s own fastest train! While many know about India’s Vande Bharat or Pakistan’s Karakoram Express, Nepal has introduced its swiftest rail service, the DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) passenger train, which runs on the Jayanagar-Kurtha route.

This train covers 36 kilometers in about two hours. It can reach a top speed of 110 km/h (68 mph), but typically operates at an average speed of 40-50 km/h (25-31 mph) depending on track conditions and scheduled stops. Despite not breaking speed records, it serves an important role in connecting regions in Nepal.
Wondering about the ticket prices? Here’s the breakdown:
- AC Coach Fare: Rs. 281 (Indian Rupees)
- General Coach Fare: Rs. 56.25 (Indian Rupees)
The DEMU train is equipped with five coaches: one air-conditioned and four standard ones. It has a seating capacity for 300 passengers, plus room for an additional 700 who may stand.
Historically, this railway line dates back to the British Raj, originally built to transport timber from forests in Mahottari, Nepal, to India. The route has undergone changes, with the first service restarting on April 2, 2022, thanks to the joint efforts of Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sher Bahadur Deuba. Recently, the second segment from Kurtha to Bijalpura opened in July 2023, and a third section is in the works.
What really stands out about this train is its affordability. It may not be the fastest or have the most luxurious amenities, but it provides a reliable travel option for many in the region.
As Nepal’s rail network continues to develop, it’s clear that this service is more than just a means of transportation; it’s a bridge connecting communities. So, if you’re ever in Nepal, why not give it a ride and enjoy the scenery?
