Discover New Food Storage Regulations as Isle Royale National Park Kicks Off the 2025 Season!

Isle Royale National Park in Michigan has just kicked off its 2025 season, and there are some new rules for food storage to keep both wildlife and visitors safe. These changes emphasize the importance of properly managing food while camping, especially with regards to animals.

The National Park Service has updated its guidelines to require animal-resistant containers for overnight camping trips. This includes not just food but also trash, scented items, and cooking supplies. For more information, you can check out this list of approved containers, often referred to as bear-resistant.

In addition to these containers, the park plans to install food storage lockers at every campground. Campers should use these lockers or, if they’re camping in tents, keep their food in the designated animal-resistant containers.

For those venturing far into the wilderness, where lockers may not be available, the NPS has some handy tips. You should hang your food container at least 12 feet high and 6 feet away from the tree trunk. If hanging isn’t an option, secure your container to a sturdy rock or tree, ensuring it’s at least 200 feet from your campsite. For boaters, it’s best to stow food in the cabin or a secure container.

These measures are not just rules; they are crucial for maintaining the delicate balance of nature within the park. As outdoor experts emphasize, keeping food out of reach of wildlife helps prevent dangerous encounters and supports the natural behavior of animals.

Recent surveys indicate that more than 50% of campers have had firsthand experiences with wildlife approaching their campsites due to improperly stored food. By following the new regulations, we can all contribute to a safer and more enjoyable outdoor experience.
