Isle Royale National Park in Michigan has just kicked off its 2025 season, and there are some new rules for food storage to keep both wildlife and visitors safe. These changes emphasize the importance of properly managing food while camping, especially with regards to animals.

The National Park Service has updated its guidelines to require animal-resistant containers for overnight camping trips. You should hang your food container at least 12 feet high and 6 feet away from the tree trunk. If hanging isn’t an option, secure your container to a sturdy rock or tree, ensuring it’s at least 200 feet from your campsite. For boaters, it’s best to stow food in the cabin or a secure container.
