New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, along with Rear Admiral Garin Golding of the Royal New Zealand Navy, recently visited the Indian Navy’s latest destroyer, INS Surat, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This visit highlights the growing ties between New Zealand and India, especially in the maritime sector.
INS Surat was commissioned on January 15, 2025, and reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense with over 75% of its components sourced locally. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, this guided missile destroyer is a testament to India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, aimed at forging a strong indigenous defense manufacturing base.
During the visit, Prime Minister Luxon was welcomed aboard by Vice-Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh, who provided insights into the ship’s advanced technologies and capabilities. These discussions underscored the ship’s crucial role in enhancing national maritime security.
Luxon’s trip coincided with HMNZS Te Kaha’s stay in Mumbai, signaling strengthening naval relations. The two navies are exploring deeper interactions through various planned activities, including cross-deck visits and sports events. These initiatives are designed to foster cooperation and camaraderie between naval forces.
Moreover, Rear Admiral Golding’s engagements included a visit to the Naval Dockyard’s Heritage Hall and strategic discussions with Indian counterparts. Such interactions reflect a broader trend of increasing military collaboration among countries in the Indo-Pacific region, aimed at addressing common security challenges.
Recent research indicates that countries are recognizing the importance of joint military exercises to boost regional stability. For instance, in 2022, 66% of nations surveyed by the International Institute for Strategic Studies emphasized collaborative defense efforts as vital for peacekeeping in their regions.
As these two navies work together, they not only reinforce their operational capabilities but also signal an evolving dynamic in international relations aimed at maritime security and defense cooperation.
