The Ingenuity drone has changed how we explore Mars. After its remarkable 72 flights, NASA is now planning something bigger: the Mars Chopper, a drone the size of an SUV. This new drone will use six rotors, each with six blades, to navigate the thin Martian air. Exciting projects are already in the works to maximize its potential.

One interesting idea is called Nighthawk. This plan was presented at the recent Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas. Unlike Ingenuity, which relied on the Perseverance rover for support, Nighthawk will operate independently. It aims to explore Eastern Noctis Labyrinthus, a unique region that features canyons, dune fields, and lava flows, located between the famous Valles Marineris canyon and the Tharsis volcanic plateau.
Nighthawk will primarily focus on studying this area for potential signs of past life and assessing its suitability for future human visits. Among its specific objectives is to examine Noctis Landing, a candidate site for when humans eventually touch down on Mars. This mission would also help scientists understand water and volcanic features in the area, including Noctis Volcano, which may hold significant glacier ice.
To carry out its mission, Nighthawk will carry three scientific instruments, all weighing 6.6 pounds (3 kg) of the total 11 pounds (5 kg) available for the Mars Chopper. This setup will enable it to fly as high as 4,920 feet (1,500 meters). In contrast, Ingenuity’s flights were limited to just 1.6 miles (2.6 kilometers) due to the thicker atmosphere in Jezero Crater.
The instruments include:
– OCCAM (Omni-directional Color CAMera system): A multi-camera system for navigation and geological observation.
– NIRAC: A spectrometer and context camera for analyzing the Martian surface.
– PMWS (Puli Mars Water Snooper): A neutron detector to measure water levels beneath the surface.
Nighthawk aims to conduct 100 flights over its mission, each covering up to 1.86 miles (3 km). According to Pascal Lee from the SETI Institute and NASA’s Ames Research Center, the Nighthawk project offers a science mission that exceeds what Ingenuity could achieve. The capabilities of the Mars Chopper will make it possible to learn much more about the Martian environment.
While it’s unclear when the Mars Chopper proposals will be put into action, the potential for new discoveries is truly exciting. Missions like Nighthawk could reveal crucial insights about our neighboring planet, paving the way for future exploration and perhaps even human habitation.
