Discover Northeastern State University’s New Optometry Facility: A Lifeline for Rural and Tribal Communities

The Oklahoma College of Optometry, located at Northeastern State University (NSU), has unveiled a new $40 million facility. Spanning 78,000 square feet across three stories, it opens just in time for the fall semester. The design is modern, featuring an eye exam motif on the exterior.

This project is particularly significant for the Cherokee Nation, which contributed $5 million. Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. emphasized the importance of this investment in healthcare education, stating it would positively impact hundreds of future optometrists. The clinic connected to this facility is projected to handle over 40,000 patient visits each year through Cherokee Nation Health Services.

The vision of delivering quality eye care to tribal communities started back in 1979 with the college’s inception. Today, it’s one of just 25 optometric colleges in the U.S. and the only one dedicated to rural and tribal populations.

Dr. Nate Lighthizer, the dean of the College of Optometry, voiced excitement about the new opportunities this facility creates. With more space and advanced technology, they plan to expand services. New offerings include a refractive surgery clinic, enhanced contact lens and primary care clinics, and an aesthetics clinic. This facility symbolizes a strong commitment to serving the people of Oklahoma.

The college is situated in Tahlequah, right by NSU’s RiverHawks softball park. By investing in this facility, NSU aims to improve eye care access and education for future professionals.
