Located at 1006 Main Street, Numero 28 Pizzeria and Vineria has quickly become a favorite in Bastrop. The restaurant bursts with warm yellow light, inviting diners indoors.
On a recent visit, local musician Blake Torrey Wetsel and his friend Julie Anne Robinson shared a table outside. “Every time I drove by, I saw people waiting to get in,” Wetsel noted, praising the restaurant’s reputation. Their meal included pappardelle bolognese and gnocchi al pesto, which they both raved about. Wetsel described it as “the best Italian food I’ve had in a long time,” and Robinson, a regular at the Austin location of Numero 28, echoed his sentiments.
Numero 28 is part of a growing brand that began in New York City. Founded by two brothers, the name reflects part of their original street address. The Bastrop location opened its doors in October 2022, joining its sister restaurant in Austin, which debuted in 2014.
Marco Borghi, a co-owner, shared that the menu features dishes inspired by the diverse regions of Italy, particularly the south. He emphasized a dedication to authentic recipes. “These are traditional recipes; we didn’t invent them,” Borghi said. Italian cuisine varies widely by region: northern Italy uses more creams and butter, while the south focuses on fresh tomatoes and seafood, thanks to its coastal geography. The commitment to quality ingredients and methods shines through their homemade pasta and sauces.
Wetsel and Robinson, for instance, enjoyed classic Italian dishes made from family recipes. Borghi mentioned their lasagna, which boasts multiple layers of ground beef, béchamel, and parmesan cheese. “It’s everyday food in Italy, enjoyed by everyone,” he explained.
A popular feature of the menu is the pizza. With both red and white varieties, diners can choose personal favorites or try something new. The Capricciosa pizza, adorned with prosciutto, mozzarella, and arugula, is especially well-received.
Wine lovers also find plenty to celebrate at Numero 28. The selection includes notable wines from regions like Piedmont and Tuscany. Borghi believes the experience of dining goes beyond just food—it’s also about connection and offering excellent service. “We want guests to leave with wonderful memories,” he expressed.
Borghi’s partner, Mauro Santucci, adds a lively touch behind the bar, crafting cocktails and engaging with diners. His welcoming nature and enthusiasm reflect the restaurant’s overall goal of creating a friendly atmosphere. Customers appreciate this, as many share their joy about the service and the meals on social media platforms.
Restaurant-goers can look forward to patio seating being added, expanding the cozy dining experience. With prices ranging from $7 for appetizers to $20 for entrees, it caters to various budgets while maintaining a commitment to quality.
Numero 28 is open from Tuesday to Sunday, making it a convenient dining option for locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re craving classic Italian or just looking for a vibrant community spot to enjoy a meal, this eatery offers both a taste of Italy and a warm local atmosphere.
