Richmond-based Ohm Health has just launched an innovative product: a “breathing lamp.” This unique lamp aims to help users practice intentional breathing while measuring biometrics like heart rate and perspiration.
Founder James McGoff, who previously co-founded TemperPack Technologies, came up with the idea after exploring the health benefits of controlled breathing. The lamp’s design encourages rhythmic breathing through soothing sounds and a gentle light. It includes an optional mobile app that tracks metrics about the user’s body, but you don’t need the app to enjoy its benefits.
Currently, the lamp is available for preorder at $249, a limited price for the first 2,000 orders. Demand has been strong, with over 500 preorders as of mid-December.
The lamp features a small riverstone rock that activates the breathing exercise when picked up. It guides users through slow, deep breaths, helping to lower stress and calm the nervous system. A calming blue glow indicates when a user reaches a tranquil state.
Interestingly, the non-screen design is a major selling point. Co-founder John Briney noted that many users appreciate the simplicity of using the lamp without an app. The idea is to promote mindfulness in a tech-driven world.
Ohm Health recently showcased the lamp at the Eudemonia Summit in Florida, receiving positive feedback from nearly 750 attendees. Participants enjoyed its screen-free approach, focusing on the breathing experience rather than digital distractions.
The company is also gearing up for larger production runs. By March, they plan to produce between 5,000 and 10,000 units at a facility in Shenzhen, China. They aim for a broader market launch in the middle of next year.
Startup culture encourages innovation like this. Health tech is growing rapidly, with rising interest in mindfulness tools. According to a recent survey, one in three Americans actively seek ways to manage stress. Products like the Ohm lamp could meet this growing demand.
In fundraising, Ohm has raised about $1.9 million from investors, with plans for a new funding round in early 2026. This funding will help the team expand and take their products to market effectively.
