B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor, Wendy Cocchia, recently hosted an exciting event for the province’s Consular Corps. This gathering brought together representatives from over 20 countries in the beautiful Okanagan region from April 30 to May 2.

During the first day of the Okanagan Business Showcase, Cocchia met with Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas and Chamber President Derek Gratz. These discussions centered on building stronger business ties in the region.
One highlight was her visit to Jealous Fruits and KF Aerospace. Cocchia also attended the opening of Vitalis, a manufacturer focused on CO2-based technologies.
Chief Robert Louie from the Westbank First Nation also joined the mix. At a dinner held at Cedar Creek Winery, he expressed the importance of fostering business partnerships: "It was an honor to welcome representatives from 23 countries to the traditional territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation. In this time of global economic uncertainty, strengthening trade relationships is crucial. First Nation businesses are resilient and ready to work with our international partners."
On the last day, Cocchia and the group visited BikeWays, a non-profit bike shop, as well as Paynter’s Fruit Market and Mission Hill Family Estate Winery. Cocchia remarked on the natural beauty of the Okanagan: "It’s clear why Kelowna is a favorite destination for visitors and residents alike. The entrepreneurial spirit here is undeniable."
The showcase underscores not just the beauty of the Okanagan but also its potential for innovation and collaboration in business. With ongoing economic challenges, building connections becomes all the more vital. Recent statistics show that small businesses in Canada contribute to 70% of the country’s job growth. This means events like these can play a critical role in shaping the economic landscape.
As communities continue to embrace international partnerships, the spirit of cooperation can lead to mutual prosperity that transcends borders.
