Discover OpenAI’s Ambitious Data Center in Abu Dhabi: Bigger Than Monaco!

OpenAI is taking a bold step into the future with plans for a massive data center in Abu Dhabi. This facility could become one of the largest AI infrastructure projects globally. According to a recent Bloomberg report, it will cover about 10 square miles and require the same amount of power as five nuclear reactors. That’s significantly larger than any current AI project by OpenAI or its competitors.

This new data center is part of OpenAI’s Stargate initiative, launched in January. This ambitious plan aims to establish data centers worldwide alongside partners like SoftBank and Oracle. While OpenAI’s first Stargate center under development in Abilene, Texas, will harness 1.2 gigawatts of power, the Abu Dhabi center is expected to produce over four times that amount.

The relationship between OpenAI and the UAE has been growing for years. In 2023, OpenAI partnered with G42, a tech company based in Abu Dhabi, to promote AI adoption in the region. During a visit to Abu Dhabi, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, commended the UAE for its early focus on AI, saying they were discussing it before it became a trend.

However, this partnership has sparked some concerns in the U.S. About G42’s connections have raised alarms among lawmakers. Founded in 2018 and chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, G42 has links to entities that have drawn scrutiny, including Huawei, which has been blacklisted in the U.S.

In response to growing scrutiny, G42’s CEO announced a change in strategy in early 2024, stating that the company divested all investments in China, reducing its presence there.

Despite the complexities surrounding this collaboration, it’s clear both OpenAI and G42 are committed to advancing technology in the UAE.
