Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime guitarist, Zakk Wylde, recently shared the emotional last text he received from the legendary rocker following Black Sabbath’s farewell concert. The message simply read, “Zakky, sorry, it was like a madhouse back there. I didn’t see you. Thanks for everything.”
In his interview, Wylde reflected on their bond. “It was just us talking, saying, ‘I love you, buddy.’ That was it.”
Wylde had hoped to connect with Ozzy after the concert on July 5, 2023, in Birmingham, England, but the chaos backstage made it difficult. He noticed the whirlwind of people surrounding Ozzy and chose to step back. “Everybody and their mother were in the backstage dressing room. I just wanted him to have a break. Our priority was making sure that Oz was okay,” he explained.
For Wylde, seeing Ozzy perform that night was a bittersweet moment. “That was the last time I saw him,” he said. He described their friendship as family-like, noting that Ozzy felt like an older brother to him. “There was almost a 20-year age gap between us. We had fun together, but I could always turn to him for advice,” he shared.
Their relationship ran deep; Ozzy was even the godfather to Wylde’s oldest son. Wylde recounted how close their families were. “If Sharon called and asked us to watch the house while they traveled, we’d do it without question. It felt like family.”
Ozzy Osbourne passed away on July 22 at age 76 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease, along with complications from a quad bike accident he suffered in 2003. According to recent research from the Michael J. Fox Foundation, around 1 million people in the U.S. are living with Parkinson’s disease, highlighting the broader impact of this condition on families and caregivers.
In a heartfelt statement, Sharon Osbourne and their children expressed their grief: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we report our beloved Ozzy has passed away. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.”
Ozzy was honored with a funeral procession in Birmingham that underscored his impact on fans and musicians alike. As social media continues to buzz with tributes, it’s clear that Wylde’s memories and shared experiences reflect what many feel for the beloved rock icon.
