Perplexity has introduced a new tool called Comet, aiming to change how we browse the internet. This AI-powered browser, available only to Perplexity Max subscribers or early access users, seeks to streamline your online activities by integrating AI throughout your browsing experience.

One of Comet’s standout features is its AI answer engine. When you type a query into the address bar, instead of traditional search results, you receive links to relevant sites along with AI-generated information. While this offers a more focused view, it can be a surprise for users accustomed to seeing a wide array of options from Google.

Comet also includes an AI assistant, similar to Google’s Gemini tool. You can interact with it through a sidebar, asking questions or even using voice commands. For instance, it can summarize articles, describe images, and generate overviews of videos. Plus, it quickly scans all your open tabs to provide concise summaries of each one, making it easier to keep track of your research.

What’s especially remarkable is Comet’s ability to perform tasks for you. After linking your Google account, it can send emails, close inactive tabs, or even post messages on social media. During testing, it efficiently unsubscribed from promotional emails and managed LinkedIn invites. However, while the AI is capable, some users might find it faster to complete these tasks manually. For example, it took Comet two minutes to unsubscribe from emails, while I timed myself and did it in just 30 seconds.

Comet also has a unique command feature. By saying “take control of my browser,” you can unlock more advanced functions, such as booking reservations or making purchases. This feature is still developing; while it successfully added items to my cart on Amazon and completed the checkout, it encountered problems when trying to make restaurant reservations, requiring me to provide my contact details after a placeholder was entered.

Perplexity aims to challenge Google’s market share with Comet’s innovative features. Jesse Dwyer, a spokesperson for Perplexity, noted that while some complex tasks do face hurdles due to current AI limitations, improvements are on the way as AI technology evolves.

Public reaction has been mixed. Some users appreciate the assistance for busy tasks, while others prefer the hands-on approach, particularly for quick actions. This blend of automation and manual interacting reflects an ongoing trend in technology where the balance of human input and AI integration is crucial.
