In the stunning Andes Mountains of Peru, scientists recently discovered a unique frog with striking red eyes and long fingers. This new species, named Phrynopus manuelriosi, was found in Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park during a wildlife survey. It’s named after Manuel Ríos, a dedicated Peruvian conservationist.
The discovery was documented in a study published in PeerJ. This frog is small—just over an inch long—but its bright red eyes and slender body make it hard to miss. Researchers had noticed these frogs during their expeditions starting in 2010 and, after close examination, realized they had identified a brand-new species.
The team aimed to explore the park’s rich biodiversity and soon encountered frogs unlike any they had seen before. Their nighttime expeditions revealed the distinct features of these frogs, which range in color from pale brown to yellowish-brown, adorned with darker markings and vivid red patches.
While the frog’s looks are captivating, its discovery offers insights into the ecological health of its habitat. Found in an “elfin forest” at around 10,760 feet elevation, these frogs thrive in cooler temperatures and dense vegetation, which is home to various rare species. Despite the park’s protections, scientists worry about the ongoing threats to the area, including nearby habitat destruction caused by human activities.
Manuel Ríos, who dedicated his life to preserving Peru’s natural heritage, serves as an inspiring figure for this new species. Although researchers are still learning about the frog’s behavior and lifestyle, they stress the need for ongoing protection of its habitat. Without stronger conservation efforts, the frogs—and other vulnerable species—could be at risk.
