WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University’s online master’s degrees in engineering have received top honors in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings. Four of these programs—electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, and engineering management—are ranked No. 1. This is a significant jump for electrical engineering, moving up from No. 3 last year. Industrial, mechanical, and engineering management programs held onto their top spots.

Purdue’s online master’s in civil engineering also performed well, coming in at No. 2 nationally. Moreover, the university secured the No. 5 position for online engineering master’s programs for veterans, maintaining the same rank from 2024.

In total, Purdue’s engineering programs only trail behind the University of California, Los Angeles, and are tied with the University of Illinois for the No. 2 spot. Other notable schools like Pennsylvania State University and the University of Nebraska ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, while the University of Maryland and University of Michigan shared the 9th position.

Arvind Raman, the Dean of the College of Engineering, emphasized Purdue’s commitment to providing high-quality online education. He noted the school’s success in broadening access to learning opportunities across various fields and demographics.

Purdue’s online master’s programs in education also shone in the rankings. The curriculum and instruction program climbed to No. 3, a rise from No. 6 last year, while the educational administration and supervision program improved from No. 11 to No. 7. Additionally, Purdue made strides in programs for veterans, tying with North Carolina State University at No. 7.

Phillip VanFossen, interim dean of the College of Education, credited the faculty’s dedication to delivering top-notch online education across numerous specializations.

Dimitrios Peroulis, senior vice president for partnerships and online initiatives, highlighted the importance of online learning in today’s skills-based economy. Purdue plans to expand its program offerings to meet the evolving needs of students and professionals alike.

U.S. News rankings consider multiple factors, such as student quality, faculty credentials, and the effectiveness of online teaching practices. They also assess student support services and career guidance, along with peer reviews from academic leaders.
