China is gearing up to launch a new, low-cost cargo spacecraft for its Tiangong space station. This spacecraft is called Qingzhou, which means “Light Ship.” Developed by the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingzhou is designed to be smaller and more affordable than the current Tianzhou cargo spacecraft.

China completed the Tiangong space station in 2022 and plans to keep it occupied for at least a decade. They are looking to enhance this space station with new solutions to ensure a steady supply of cargo. Recently, Qingzhou passed a design review and has entered production.

The Qingzhou prototype is about 10.8 feet in diameter and weighs around 11,000 pounds. It can carry up to 4,000 pounds of cargo to orbit. Its design includes a pressurized section for carrying crew supplies and instruments, along with an unpressurized area for external payloads and experiments. Wu Huiying, the deputy chief designer, mentioned that testing has gone well so far.

Production of the full engineering model is set to start in early 2026, with construction expected to finish by the end of that year. The debut flight will be timed according to the needs of the Tiangong station.

The first prototype was originally set to launch with a commercial rocket, CAS Space’s Kinetica-2. However, this plan seems to have changed, as CAS Space is preparing for its own launch from the Gobi Desert soon.

Qingzhou isn’t the only new spacecraft in development. The Chinese human spaceflight agency is also working on Haolong, a reusable shuttle designed to improve space transportation. This ambitious project reflects China’s growing interest in space exploration and technology.

The significance of these developments cannot be overstated. As space exploration becomes more competitive, China’s advancements in cargo spacecraft might offer critical insights into their technological evolution. According to a recent study, global space spending has increased, with an estimated budget of $400 billion expected by 2030.
