Sabert Corporation Europe has introduced PULPUltra, a new eco-friendly food packaging solution that avoids intentionally added PFAS, across Europe, and the UK & Ireland. This innovation is timely, as stricter EU regulations on food packaging are on the horizon.
PULPUltra is made from over 95% renewable fibers, specifically bagasse, which is the leftover material from sugarcane processing. This design gives it strong oil and grease resistance, making it ideal for hot, ready-to-eat foods. It’s also safe for use in freezers, ovens, and microwaves, and can be composted or recycled according to EU standards. Home compostable certification is expected later this year, further enhancing its eco-credentials.
Alex Noake, a senior vice president at Sabert Europe, noted that PULPUltra helps customers stay ahead of regulatory changes about PFAS. These regulations will impose tighter limits on PFAS—also known as “forever chemicals”—with new rules set to take effect in August 2026.
Interestingly, a recent survey showed that nearly 60% of consumers prefer products labeled as sustainable. This growing trend highlights the importance of innovations like PULPUltra, as more consumers demand eco-friendly options.
Sabert has been evolving its pulp packaging range to focus on sustainability. For instance, they’ve created special meal packaging for kids in Ireland that uses these new materials. Their experience spans over 40 years in pulp and fiber-based packaging, illustrating a long-standing commitment to quality and environmental responsibility.
Isabelle Ernotte, who oversees quality and safety at Sabert, emphasized that every product undergoes strict testing to ensure safety and performance. She believes PULPUltra showcases how material science innovation can meet both regulatory standards and customer needs.
This move by Sabert reflects a broader trend in the food service industry where companies are prioritizing sustainability without sacrificing performance. As customers become more aware and concerned about the environmental impact of packaging, solutions like PULPUltra not only cater to regulatory guidelines but also resonate with consumer values.
