SAN ANTONIO – Exciting news for San Antonio! The city has just opened the World Heritage Center, a new spot that highlights our rich culture.
San Antonio’s Mayor Ron Nirenberg pointed out that Texas has only one world heritage site, and it’s here in our city, making this opening quite special.
The center showcases the incredible story of San Antonio’s five missions, including the famous Alamo. It’s a place where different cultures in our city come together.
Mayor Nirenberg expressed his hopes for the center, saying, “We want to help people appreciate our diverse histories and experiences.”
Located on Roosevelt Avenue in South San Antonio, the center offers over 10,000 square feet of exhibit space, both indoors and outdoors. Visitors can enjoy parking, walking trails, a drum circle, and even a soccer field.
“This space reflects the strength and resilience of San Antonio’s people,” Nirenberg added. “It’s a celebration of the cultures that help our community thrive.”
Colleen Swain, the Director of the World Heritage Office, shared that the center includes various exhibits that educate visitors about the missions and the people connected to them. The stories will also highlight the interactions between locals and missionaries throughout history.
“We want to keep the exhibits fresh and engaging so that everyone has a reason to return,” Swain stated.
The project received funding from various sources, including bonds and a special tax reinvestment zone.
