In the rural Four Corners region of New Mexico, access to health care can be a challenge for college students. But that’s changing with the opening of a new health care center at a local college.
Charisse Buchanan, the director and nurse practitioner at the San Juan College Health Center, shared some exciting news: “We’re combining our health services and counseling in one place for all San Juan College students.” This new facility, which cost $2.2 million to build, is designed to meet the unique needs of students living in this remote area.
Buchanan emphasizes the importance of the center, saying, “We recognize the challenges students face due to our location. This clinic will provide easy access to high-quality care for both physical and mental health.”
One of the best parts? The services are free for all San Juan College students. Whether or not they have health insurance, students can receive care without any out-of-pocket costs. “We want students to know they can come to us for any health concern and feel comfortable in the Student Health Center,” Buchanan assures.
With the center now open, Buchanan encourages students to take advantage of the resources available to them. It’s a step forward in improving overall student well-being in a region where health care can often feel out of reach.
